Object of the Month

This convex Butler’s mirror, dating from around the 19th Century hangs in the Dining Room at Glenveagh Castle.

It is named after its ability to allow the butler to oversee the progress of a meal whilst keeping a discrete distance from the guests. From the 15th Century onwards, smaller versions known as Banker’s Mirrors were used by goldsmiths and moneylenders to see the room behind them at a glance.
