Guided Hike for Bog Day
We are teaming up with Wild Atlantic Nature for a guided hike of the Owenduff Bog to mark International Bog Day. Taking place on Sunday 23rd of July, starting at 9.30am, this is a strenuous walk that will bring you to the most remote parts of Wild Nephin National Park via Scardaun and the Bangor Trail. About the Owenduff Bog
The Owenduff Bog is one of the last intact active blanket bog systems in Ireland and Western Europe, and puts the ‘wild’ in Wild Nephin. This unique peatland ecosystem, also includes upland habitats, and river and pool systems. The Owenduff Bog supports breeding red grouse (Lagopus lagopus) and golden plover (Pluvialis apricaria) and the rivers are critical spawning grounds for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The rivers are also home to otter (Lutra lutra). Winter migrants, such as the Greenland white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons flavirostris) feed and roost on the site. The site also supports important and unique plant communities such as alpine and boreal heaths and wet heaths. Noteworthy plants recorded on the site include the bog orchid (Hammarbya paludosa), marsh clubmoss (Lycopodiella inundata), marsh saxifrage (Saxifraga hirculus), and slender green feather-moss (Hamatocaulis vernicosus).
